Description
DescriptionThe Laboratory Animal Program Director/Attending Veterinarian provides veterinary oversight and operational leadership for the University's Laboratory Animal Program, ensuring high standards of animal welfare, regulatory compliance, and support for research and teaching activities.
Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
Examples of Duties
- Oversee operations for the Laboratory Animal Program (LAP), including facility management, staffing, and budgeting for the University's vivaria.
- Serve as the primary veterinary authority for vertebrate animals and cephalopods used in campus research, teaching, and testing, providing preventative and therapeutic care, conducting or coordinating diagnostic and laboratory services, and overseeing health monitoring, treatment, and critical care situations across a variety of species and procedures as needed.
- Provide training, consultation, and outreach to faculty, staff, and students to promote humane care and use of animals involved in research and teaching.
- Collaborate with the IACUC Chair and Director of Research Compliance on investigations of concerns related to animal care and use, animal research laboratories, IACUC protocols, and personnel safety and health.
- Ensure institutional compliance with federal and state regulations, including the Animal Welfare Act, USDA requirements, PHS Policy, The Guide, The Ag Guide, and AAALAC International standards.
- Serve as a voting member of the IACUC, participating in protocol review, inspections, and program oversight.
- Maintain program resources and guidance on animal care, regulations, and best practices, staying current with relevant federal and institutional policies and accreditation standards.
- In conjunction with the Director of Research Compliance, serve as a primary contact to oversight authorities (e.g., USDA, AAALAC) and prepare or assist with reports, accreditation documentation, and site visits.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the University's animal care and research programs.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an AVMA accredited institution.
- Current Illinois veterinary licensure, or ability to obtain within one year of employment.
- Experience with a wide range of vertebrate animals in a clinical or laboratory animal care setting required, with 5 or more years' experience preferred.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Post-doctoral training in laboratory animal medicine or current ACLAM certification preferred, but not required.
